Postcards from our travelers
Real trips, real networks, zero stings.
Installed the Japan plan on the train from Narita. Maps and my transit app were live before I reached the hotel, and it cost less than one day of my carrier's roaming.
Emma R.
Two weeks in Japan
One regional plan covered Spain, France, and Italy. No swapping anything at borders, which is exactly what I wanted from a month of trains.
Sofia A.
Europe by rail
Bought four eSIMs in one order for the family. Everyone had their QR code within a minute and the kids were streaming on the drive from the airport.
Priya N.
Family trip to Thailand
I tether a laptop for client calls. The 20 GB plan handled two weeks across New York and Chicago without a hiccup, and support answered me at 11pm.

Business travel in the US
First eSIM I have ever used and the install guide in the email was clear enough that I never needed help. Coverage was fast in Istanbul and out in Cappadocia.
Daniel K.
Ten days in Turkey
Ran low on data halfway through Morocco, topped up from the dashboard in about thirty seconds, and kept going. No reinstall, no drama.

What do travelers ask most?
The things people ask us most.
What is a travel eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM chip built into most modern smartphones. Instead of buying a plastic SIM card at an airport kiosk or waiting for one to ship, you purchase a data plan online and receive a QR code by email. Scanning that code downloads the carrier profile directly onto your phone. When you arrive at your destination, the phone connects to a local network just like a physical SIM would, giving you the same coverage a local resident gets. Nothing physical to swap, carry, or lose. Your original SIM stays in place and keeps working for calls and texts through dual-SIM mode, so you get the best of both worlds: local data prices and your existing phone number.
Will Jelly eSIM work on my phone?
If your phone is eSIM capable and carrier unlocked, yes. Compatible devices include iPhone XR and every model since, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many recent flagship phones from other manufacturers. Two things must be true: the device needs a built-in eSIM chip (most phones sold after 2020 have one), and it cannot be locked to a specific carrier. Phones bought outright or through an unlocked reseller are usually fine. If you bought yours on a carrier contract, ask that carrier to unlock it before your trip. Our compatibility checker confirms your exact model in one tap so you never buy a plan your phone cannot use.
Can I keep my own number and WhatsApp?
Yes. Jelly runs alongside your existing SIM in dual-SIM mode, which every eSIM-capable phone supports. Your home SIM stays active for incoming calls, outgoing texts, and apps like WhatsApp that are tied to your number. The Jelly eSIM handles only mobile data, so nothing about your daily phone experience changes except that your data now rides on a cheaper local network instead of expensive roaming. The key step is to disable data roaming on your home line so your carrier does not bill you for background data while the Jelly line handles all internet traffic. WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, and every other messaging app continue working exactly as before.
When should I install and activate?
Install the eSIM profile before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi at home or in the airport lounge. Downloading the profile takes under a minute and only needs to happen once. Most Jelly plans start their validity countdown when the eSIM first connects to a mobile network at your destination, not when you install the profile, so installing early costs you nothing. This means you can install days in advance if you prefer. When you land, open your phone settings, enable the Jelly line, set it as your data source, and allow data roaming on that line. Connection usually happens within a minute or two. Installing early saves you from hunting for airport Wi-Fi in an unfamiliar terminal.
Do I need Wi-Fi to install my eSIM?
You need an internet connection to download the eSIM profile onto your phone, so install it while you are on Wi-Fi at home, at a hotel, or even using your existing mobile data before you leave. The download is small and takes under a minute. Once the profile is installed, it stays on your phone permanently until you remove it. Activating the eSIM at your destination does not require Wi-Fi or any other connection; the phone reaches out to the local carrier network automatically. This is why we recommend installing before your trip: it separates the download step (which needs internet) from the activation step (which happens on its own when you land).
What happens if I run out of data?
Top up from your Jelly dashboard in a few taps. The additional data attaches to the eSIM profile already installed on your phone, so there is no second QR code to scan and no reinstall process. Top-up prices are the same published rates as new plans, with no premium for buying more data after your initial purchase. You can top up as many times as you need during a trip. If you want to avoid running out entirely, our data estimator on the homepage helps you size the right plan before you buy, taking into account trip length and how heavily you use your phone for maps, social media, and video.
